I am looking for a good value, but decent hotel close to the Hard Rock to play poker.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I was planning on going down there soon, as well.
I was gonna AirBNB, but if I wanted a nearby hotel, I'd probably look into the little group right by Brandon, by the Westfield Mall.
The area is probably better than by the Hard Rock, while still being a close drive.
I live here -- if you want detailed info happy to help.
I wouldn't stay in Brandon unless you strictly want to see the casino.
Can stay in much much nicer places just as close to SHRT.
If you've never been to SHRT you will love the poker room.
So much action and the game is good every night of poker atlas derby week.
It's my favorite poker room I've found so far in Florida.
Honestly the parking garage is not a bad place to sleep click to see more your car.
I've done it but definitely not that comfortable.
Thanks, I went the Airbnb route.
I will poker wikipedia hands there this weekend.
I am in Tampa.
I will take a trip to Tampa Downs and Derby Lane, as well.
I just got back today here is part one of the trip report.
Florida Poker Room 1 Derby Lane St.
Petersburg It is fairly large room broken into 3 sections: a tournament section separated from the from the other sections by a bar and dog wagering area where punters watch the dogs.
The middle section has low limit-poker 1-2 NL, 2-4 LH, and table games.
Largest section of the room has mix of NL 1-2 and 1-3.
There is 3 table high limit section that spread a 2-5 and a 1-3.
In all games you could straddle from any position, the 2-5 offered poker atlas derby from any position.
It was a Saturday night and Tampa Hard Rock and 4 hour lists, so the room was crowded.
The action was good.
There was only one 2-5 game.
I do not think they get regular 2-5's, though.
Room 2 Tampa Hard Rock I have played poker in upwards of 100 rooms and there is not better designed or run poker room than Tampa Hard Rock.
The room is adjacent to the first parking garage you hit coming off the highway.
You step off the elevator and go down the escalator and you are there.
When you first reach the room there is a seating control desk staffed by two persons.
They control seating, transfers everything, and it runs poker atlas derby />They are actually separated from the tables.
To the right of the SC is the shift manager podium.
It is elevated and gives the SM a clear view of the action.
The cashier just past that.
There are 41 tables.
Two are located in a beautiful high-limit salon, where I played 5-10 and the rest are located in 3 rows of 13.
There is ample space and the chairs are comfortable.
The dealers are very professional.
This may be the best room in which I have ever played poker.
All the rooms dropped without a flop.
I cannot say enough good things about this room.
Tom Bates, the poker room manager, really did a great job designing and staffing this room.
There are a mix of tight regs, pros, and incredibly wonderful Recs.
Here is a funny story, one of the "pros" in my game gave a player advice poker atlas derby how he tips too much to beat the game.
He shows him his app, where he tracks his play, even his tips.
I later ate at the noodle bar with this player.
This guy just took himself off the self-exclusion list.
What type of idiot talks win rate and tipping with this guy?
Room 3 Tampa Greyhound Track Lucky's Card Room I stopped in here for some tourism on the way home one night.
It looks unsafe, it feels unsafe, maybe it is not too safe.
The players were all bad.
The staff was half checked out, and the room looked like time has forgotten it.
All-in-all, I was happy not to be mugged.
Room 4 Tampa Bay Downs I first stopped in there early in the morning on Monday after doing a few touristy things with the wife and there was literally no action.
I then stopped back there Tuesday evening after the lists were endless on Bravo at The Hard Rock.
There were two 1-3 NL and a couple of 1-2's.
The 1-3's were 100-500 buy-ins and allowed straddles and restraddles and the opportunity to run it twice.
One game was a little tight, but the other was majorly recreationally loose.
There was also a "private" 5-10-25 on the button PLO in ivey store high limit section.
It is actually an attractive room overlooking the track.
They give you nothing, though.
If you want some soft 1-3 action, it is here.
I will give you reports on my visit to Jacksonville and points in between later.
Thanks for the write up; the wife is from FL and we've considered moving back to live in Tampa and play the poker if I can't get a better job where we're at.
Room 3 Tampa Greyhound Track Lucky's Card Room I stopped in here for some tourism on the way home one night.
It looks unsafe, it feels unsafe, maybe it is not too safe.
They take preflop based on a pot size.
We stayed in a great gated community condo through Airbnb off Tampa Bay Blvd.
The area around there was not too great though.
I am not sure about the neighborhoods, but on the whole I loved Tampa.
Good food, affordable, soft games.
Not much more you can ask for.
I found something touristy for my wife to do a few of the days.
Not bad at all.
You can track the action through Bravo and Poker Atlas to get a feel for the landscape of Tampa poker.
We went to the US Soccer game at Raymond James, which was about a mile away and we felt comfortable walking home, but when Shops melbourne poker in drove home from the casino, the blocks in between my home and the highway looked pretty sketchy.
We were at Tampa Bay Blvd.
Where are you at now?
If there is interest, I will give you one.
If not, I will play poker with the 30 minutes it would take to write it.
I always like to hear about places I haven't been to.
I'd like to volunteer you to write about every place you've ever played.
I will work on it during my down time.
Room 5 Oxford Downs I decided to stop in the room with the most action between Tampa and Jacksonville.
It was a Thursday I called both Oxford Downs and Ocala Gainesville Poker.
Oxford had two 1-2 NL and Ocala was dead.
Oxford Downs is nice small room in the middle of nowhere next near the Villages.
There were a mix of seniors and middle age recs playing 1-2 NL 60 - 200 buy-in.
The game was tight.
The people were affable and friendly.
There was small tournament going on.
There was very little action.
I left after a half-hour and called Ocala, which was still dead and moved on.
Room 6 Orange Park Best Bet Orange Park Best Bet is the smaller of the two Jacksonville area sister properties.
It may be most famous for its cocaine fueled greyhound, but I will just talk poker.
There were several 1-2's, one 1-2 PLO, and one 2-5, which I played in.
There were no for profit players in the game.
There were only utg straddles allowed.
The buy-in was 100-500.
The game was loose, passive and just about perfect.
Even with the high rake, you should just crush here.
The dealing was a little sloppy, but not awful.
Room 7 Jacksonville Best Bet It is massive warehouse of a room devoid of any character whatsoever.
It is just about the opposite of Tampa HardRock when it comes to customer service and staff professionalism.
That being said know where the racks are, because these boys are going to pay you off.
Leave all your FPS at the door, because Jacksonville is Value Town.
They were having a massive Christmas in July high hand promotion.
There was a lot of action.
The biggest Holdem was 2-5 NL 100-500 same as its sister property.
There was a 5-5 PLO.
There may have been some for profit players in the room, but there were no competent players in my game.
I tried to blend in as best as possible as a middle age rec, but I just raised too much and won too much to go unnoticed.
One older mini-whale made a comment about me being the only playing to win or even knowing how to win.
He chided his fellow players, saying won't any click you fight back.
He is just stealing your money.
I gave him a hard time for folding like a little girl when closing the action against me and asking others to fight his battles.
They never fought back.
For two days, they only called.
I was 3-bet once.
He came over to join me for lunch with my cousin's husband, who met me at the end of my session, and I told him I was on my way to be a tourist when I finished.
He laughed and told me not to come back.
Overall the action is great.
The room is horrible.
It has no competition and knows it.
Part 3 to follow Daytona and Orange City.
